When asked the question of how he wanted to live his life, Kemp Jaycox answered simply: love nature.

As a lasting legacy for Kemp at one of the natural places most important to him, Kemp’s wife, Cindy, daughter, Kate, and mother, Becky, have partnered with the Arc of Appalachia on a very special project and ask friends and family to join them in contributing.

The Memorial Project. Three Chimney Swift memorial towers will be artistically designed by wood craftsman Brad Gray of Rome, Ohio, constructed from native hardwoods, and installed at the trailheads of three Arc of Appalachia Preserves; Big Cola in Hocking Hills, Kamama Prairie, and the Arc’s headquarters, the Highlands Nature Sanctuary. The tower structures will include educational displays, benches for hikers to rest, and signage honoring Kemp’s passion for protecting the planet. The towers will provide critically needed nesting and breeding sites for the rapidly declining Chimney Swift population.

Why Protect Chimney Swifts? These migratory birds are vital for controlling mosquitoes and other bugs, and they are one of the few birds that amazingly spend all day flying, only resting at night within chimneys or preservation towers. Cindy noted, “As a man who was confined to a wheelchair for a decade, Kemp would love this idea of protecting birds that never sit down.”

Who is the Arc of Appalachia? The Arc of Appalachia is a nonprofit acquirer and steward of nature preserves in Appalachian Ohio, Kentucky, and West Virginia. Kemp was an annual donor to the Arc and loved hiking there with friends and his wife during his 20s and 30s. Kemp was very fond of the Arc, and he and Director Nancy co-hosted a few programs together over the years associated with his interest in eco-spirituality and compassionate care of our planet. The Arc currently manages 38 preserves and nearly 15,000 acres of natural areas. Learn more about the Arc here.
